Android location permissions: precise or approximate?

Understand location access types, precise vs. approximate location, and how to review Android app permissions.

In this guide
  1. Approximate vs. precise location: what is the difference? Approximate access provides a less specific area; precise access enables a more detailed estimate. Even precise permission does not guarantee an exact point: environment, signal, and device affect results. Supported Android versions let users choose this level of detail. (Android Developers)
  2. What does “only while using the app” mean? This limits access to the usage context allowed by the system. Background access is separate and necessary for some features to keep obtaining location while the app is not visible. Options and settings paths vary by Android version and manufacturer. (Android Developers)
  3. How do you review Alkateia's permissions? In Android settings, find Apps, select Alkateia, and open Permissions. Select Location and review your device's options. You do not need to give anyone your account password. Allow only access you understand and want to use. (Android Help)
  4. Does turning location off delete sent positions? No. Stopping new positions does not retrieve messages, maps, or screenshots already received. Also use the app's control to end an active session and check its status. For requests about data retained by the service, consult the Privacy Policy.
  5. Why did granting permission not fix the problem? Permission is one requirement, not the only one. The device must still obtain and transmit a position, and the recipient must receive it. Connectivity, battery, or sharing that has already ended may explain missing updates. See the troubleshooting guide before changing other settings indiscriminately.
  6. How can you explain these choices to children? Show that the phone asks about app access, while the conversation determines who receives location. Test briefly together and show how to stop. Alkateia offers current location, 15-minute sharing, and live sharing until canceled; choose the mode suited to the situation and parents' or guardians' involvement.

Android permissions control whether and under what conditions an app can access device location. They do not alone decide which people receive that information. System permission and in-app sharing choices need to be understood together.
